CIAA POSTSEASON HONORS ANNOUNCES

The CIAA released its postseason honors last week and there were several highlights to point out.  A few seniors hauled in honors that are known and some unknowns also were honored.  Shaw senior QB QUINTEZ SMITH (6000, 195) was named the Defensive Player of the Year ranked first in Division II in interceptions with nine and has four touchdowns on interception returns.  He also has 49 tackles, including 35 solos, on the season.  St. Augustine’s senior DE #90 MARCUS CRUMP (6053, 235) was named to the 1st team after totaling 67 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, two breakups, eight hurries, and one fumble recovery.  While he was not honored we thought we would point out that Shaw senior WR #8 DE’ANDRE OKONJI (6014, 198) had a very productive year with 29 catches for 606 yards, and three touchdowns while averaging 20.9 yards per catch.  He could be a prospect worth taking a late look at and is a player we have not evaluated yet.  Elizabeth City State senior CB #24 JUSTIN HAMILTON (5094, 160) lacks the size NFL teams look for but had 39 tackles, two tackles for loss, nine picks, seven breakups, three forced fumbles, and four blocked kicks on his way to earning 1st team plaudits.  Juniors of note that could be worth evaluating by NFL teams this spring include Elizabeth City State DE #92 MALCOLM JENKINS (6044, 235), ECSU TE #85 KARVIN GWALTNEY (6034, 220), Virginia Union LT #70 DAVID MIMS (6076, 335), Shaw OT #73 EDAWN COUGHMAN (6054, 310), Johnson C. Smith WR #80 JEREMY FRANKLIN (6024, 195), Bowie State FS #1 TERENCE PEETE JR. (6032, 237), and Shaw OLB #30 FRED SPARKMAN (6014, 220) and RB #20 RAYMOND WILLIAMS (5110, 190) who all earned 1st team honors.  Juniors of note on the second team include ECSU WR #5 DEXTER MANLEY (6051, 189) and JCSU #7 LAWYER MONTGOMERY (6024, 185).
